How to Resist Terror

The Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

We cannot let terror win by playing by the rules it sets.

Fear is gaining ground in the world. It seems to be infecting more and more hearts like an insidious disease.

Senseless acts of violence perpetrated against strangers have been all over the news lately. These “acts of terror” manufacture fearfulness and gather power from the terror of their victims. This is evil.

I have often wondered why the Bible repeatedly commands people not to fear rather than comforting them in their fear. I think it is because fear and faith are not compatible. Fear opens doors for evil of many kinds. Terrorists work to create fear because fear gives them power.

Fear empowers evil.

After our initial emotional responses, we choose whether to react out of fear or act in faith with courage.

We will either be enslaved by fear or we will live knowing we are loved and called to love in return.

Corrie Ten Boom Quote

I generally avoid politics as much as I can. But I am disturbed when political decisions directly contradict the fiber of life as a citizen of the kingdom of light. I find myself out of step with prominent politicians who claim to be Christian. Sound bites about how to keep ourselves safe from “them” fill the air. The rhetoric draws sharp lines between those of us who were born in the west and already enjoy stable governments, sound laws, and a good economy, and “them” people who are vilified and feared because they are different.

I don’t mean to imply that we should ignore national security, but in the process of making wise decisions we cannot forget who we are.

We cannot play by the rules terror sets.

Can courageous Christians become a counter-terrorism force?

Is it possible to resist terror?

Over the next few days I will be posting 4 ways ordinary people can counter terror.

Amen. My heart is broken by the hard-hearted rhetoric I hear towards these desparate people.
