Counter Terror Operation: Courageous Love

Counter Terror Strategy # 1: Counter terror by risking love.

courageous hospitality

I heard a radio interview with a young woman who arrived at the outer door of her apartment building in Paris just as shots were fired by terrorists nearby. She had just slipped inside when a terrified crowd of strangers began pounding on her door. Frantically, they begged her to shelter them from the gunman. She had a fraction of a second to choose whether to open her door, endangering herself, or leave it closed, leaving nearly a hundred people in harm’s way. She opened the door. Then she packed as many of them as she could into her small apartment. She offered them comfort and hospitality. She is a counter-terrorism hero.

Evil wins when fear prompts us to choose self-protectiveness instead of courageous love.

In clear-eyed hindsight we hail the ordinary people who risked everything to shelter Jews during World War II.  Some suffered in concentration camps and died for their brave choices. They stood firmly on the side of the vilified and undervalued members of society while powerful evil was spreading fear and hatred. Some lost their lives in the process but they did not lose their souls.

Jesus said,

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.Matthew 10:28 (NIV)

Our own increasingly dark times are offering us the same opportunity. Dark-skinned middle eastern people fleeing terror, cruelty, and oppression are being vilified along with the wolves who hide among them. Some claim that it would be lunacy to act compassionately toward these people who are without homes and without hope because we fear terrorists who may be in their midst. We must choose whether to lock ourselves safely in and plug our ears against the cries of those dying just outside or to risk courageous hospitality instead.
